Components - Modems
Modems are used for 2 main functions,
Internet Access and Faxing. The latest modem standard is v.92 which
offers several benefits over the older v.90 modems - if you have
an ISP which supports v.92, upgrading your modem could provide real
benefits to you.
 |
- Quick Connect
The connection speed when you first connect can be increased
by 50% or more - so you could have a connection ready to
go in 10 seconds instead of 20-30!
- Increased Upload Speed
When sending data back to the Internet, you will be able
to get better "upstream" performance - the current
v.90 standard had a maximum of 33.6kbps, v.92 increases
this to 48kbps.

- Modem-On-Hold
The modem-on-hold feature allows the modem to work in conjunction
with call waiting provided by the phone company. The feature enables
a PC user to answer a new phone call for up to 16 minutes (or
for how long the Internet Service Provider permits) – without
dropping the modem connection. The PC user is then able to resume
surfing the Internet after they terminate the voice call.
Note: Most v.92 features require support from
your Internet Service Provider for these features.
