Blue Ribbon Computers is experienced in installing, and maintaining networks for Small Business. Networks can be extremely beneficial to business, and let you share both information and resources, such as Printers or Scanners to many users at once. We can advise and assist in setting up a suitable network, whatever the size of your organisation.

A few examples of common network installation types are shown below:

A Peer to Peer Network

This is a basic type of network consisting of 2 computers connected together via a standard Ethernet cable (Cat 5se x-over cable). Where more than 2 computers are required, a simple Hub or Switch can be used. Regardless of the number of machines sharing files and peripherals (i.e. printers) can be facilitated. For the home user or small office this can be an extremely cheap but effective solution.

Simple Client/Server Network

This network consists of at least 1 "server" system (a "master computer") with 2 or more computers connected to it. In this setup, the server holds all the common data files which make the data easily accessible to all users, and the client(s) computers save their files to the server. When combiend with the right Software or Hardware all clients can have access to the internet and email through this one access point, restrictions can be placed on the server so that access is restricted to certain times and sites. Also Network printing can be setup.

Network Jargon - what does it mean?

LAN
"Local area network" - this type of network consist of a having all computers linked in the same building or site via Thin Ethernet or Cat5 se cabling, servers, and switches.

WAN
"Wide area net work", this usually consists of smaller LAN's connected via ISDN or a fibre backbone. The Internet is often considered to be the biggest WAN in the world.

Our Installation Services

We can install and configure a range of networks from a simple 2 computer network to a multi server configuration, spread across many sites, We can supply custom built Servers and PC’s under our Discoverer and Viper brands. Alternatively, we can supply alternative systems, such as Dell Servers. Server software would be typically be based on Microsoft Windows 2003 Server or Novell Netware.
